Protecting youth and building our future leaders is a role I take very seriously. I work closely with our local students to encourage their civic curiosity and promote opportunities for their continual growth. Whether it is through visits to my local schools, participating in their leadership, government and debate classes/clubs, working with them on legislation or providing internship opportunities, I spend considerable time mentoring young adults. I have brought students to Springfield to participate in the legislative process they initiated including the passing of Suffrage at 17 and expanding the college credit awarded at public Illinois institutions for a grade of 3 or higher on Advanced Placement exams. I have also worked with local law enforcement and local drug/alcohol awareness groups to pass legislation to increase the penalties for hosting of underage drinking parties, and reciprocal reporting legislation between police departments and schools. In the areas of youth sport safety, I passed a bill to safely secure moveable soccer goals, and require all high school coaches to pass an online concussion certification every two years.
