59th District: Rep. Carol Sente, D-Vernon Hills, is a stronger, more accountable representative because she gets challenged each election cycle — unlike many of her colleagues who will cruise to re-election unopposed. This year, Sente faces Mundelein village Trustee Dawn Abernathy. Abernathy points to several bad votes Sente took: empowering the state's largest employee union over taxpayers during contract talks and voting repeatedly for sham property tax freeze legislation that (conveniently!) never got voted on in the Senate. But Sente did stand up to party leadership in May by voting against a wildly unbalanced budget pushed by Speaker Michael Madigan. She is one of few Democrats who isn't afraid to challenge him, publicly and privately. Sente is endorsed for another term.
